Reducing Stress During The Holiday Season.

Six Steps to a Stress Reduced Holiday Season

Don’t forget to get enough sleep during the holiday season.  Sleep is your best step to reducing your stress.  With all the shopping, baking, wrapping, decorating, and trying to go to every holiday gathering you are invited to, a good night’s sleep will refresh and rejuvenate your body.

Here are a few ways to reduce your stress during the holiday season in addition to getting enough sleep.

  1. Manage your time.  Don’t be afraid to tell family and friends that you’ll have to catch them at the next gathering.  You are only one person and can not make it to every holiday event there is.  Manage your time so that you are not rushed to get everywhere you need to go.
  2. Budget yourself. Before going out on your shopping trip, make a budget and stick to it.  Write down some ideas for each person on your list.  You can donate to a charity in someone’s name make them a homemade gift or start a gift exchange with your family.
  3. Plan, Plan, Plan. Plan out your days of shopping, baking, visiting, and holiday gatherings.  Go ahead and plan out your menus so that you can make one shopping trip to the grocery store and not have to worry about last minute trips to the grocery store for forgotten ingredients.  And don’t forget to plan for travel delays, especially if you are flying.
  4. You can say no.  Your family and friends will understand if you tell them that you can’t do certain things.  Only say yes to what you really want to do or can do.  You’ll avoid the overwhelming feeling of having to do more than you can handle and you just might want a few minutes to yourself.
  5. Don't ignore your healthy habits. Don’t ignore your diet or your healthy eating habits.  Some indulgence is ok but don’t overindulge.  A good idea is to eat a small healthy snack before going to your parties so you don’t overindulge on the sweets and treats.  Get plenty of sleep and remember to make time for some physical activity.
  6. Don’t try to make your gathering the TV Holiday special.  TV specials are filled with perfect family gatherings and happy endings. But in reality what gathering goes off without a cake flopping or a casserole that gets burned or something not getting cooked all the way?  Accept the imperfections in others and in yourself, enjoy the family getting together and always keep a bottle of Poo~Pourri in your bathroom.

Relax, Relax, Relax.  Take the time to relax after and in between your gatherings, working and all the other running around you will do during the holidays.  Take an hour or two and pamper yourself with some aromatherapy, burn some candles and just get away from all the rush and stress that the holidays bring on.
